Steve Kalalian and Janet Mayfield founded Impact Digital in 1991 as a two-person graphic design firm serving the Fashion and Photography industries. The company initially designed and produced a range of promotional materials including books, catalogues, and identity systems.
As their client list grew, Impact Digital moved to its current SOHO location in 1996 and shifted all retouching and pre-press work in-house. By 1998, Impact Digital established itself as a top retouching and pre-press company providing full services including drum scanning, high-end retouching, proofing and ad releases.
Impact Digital is now considered the leading super-boutique retouching company and is recognized in continual press coverage and industry awards. The company has 40 employees and occupies 15,000 sq. ft. Their client list includes Deutsch, Saatchi & Saatchi, Publicis, Wieden & Kennedy, AR Media, Kraftworks, Esteé Lauder, Mac Cosmetics, Origins, Tiffany & Co., Tommy Hilfiger, Escada, Revlon, HP, Movado, Hush Puppies, Absolut Vodka, Oscar de la Renta, Jones NY, Anne Klein, Barney’s NY, L’Oreal, Italian Vogue, Harpers Bazaar, Numero, Italian Flair and W Magazine.
In early 2002, Impact Digital set its sights on high-end digital capture services. That year, digital camera backs had just reached the 16-megapixel threshold that enabled digital photography to compete with traditional film. The company also realized that once photographers entered into the digital world, they would face significant challenges in terms of cost of entry, new and changing technology, color management, digital output and proofing, digital asset management, computer hardware, software, networking and storage, etc. Impact Digital created an on-set digital capture/production system (DC7) that addressed such issues and problems that photographers and clients began to face. Impact Digital launched Industrial Color, to lead this growing industry. Industrial Color currently builds proprietary digital capture systems and rents the system with a technician to photo producers and in-house photo studios, and has offices in NY, Los Angeles and Miami.
Steve Kalalian and Impact Digital are the recipients of the following awards: Gold Effie 2006 Award - Jordan XX Nike Campaign; Art Directors Club Ad Design 2001 Awards - Distinctive Merit; The Addy Awards Ad Design 2001 Awards – Gold; The One Club Ad Design 2001 Awards - Silver Pencil; Ad Age Best Magazine Ads, 2002 - Honorable Mention; American Graphic Design Award 1997– Book Design.
